Ik heb recentelijk een Messor capitatus kolonie ontvangen met 2 werksters van Antstore.
Messor capitatus schijnt qua verzorging en leefomgeving ongeveer hetzelfde te zijn als Messor barbarus. Ik verwacht verder ook niet veel problemen met deze soort. Ik heb voor deze soort gekozen omdat Messor barbarus wijdverspreid is onder hobbyisten en daarnaast zijn de majors van Messor capitatus net iets groter.

Ik was helemaal vergeten een topic voor vragen en opmerkingen te maken. Als een mod de berichten kan verplaatsen, bedankt 
Ik dacht eerst ook dat Messor barbarus de grootste majors had, maar een Duitse vriend van me zegt dus Messor capitatus de grootste heeft. Dit is moeilijk te verifiëren omdat er op eerste gezicht niet al te veel bekend is over de soort M. capitatus. Ik heb echter niet de zin en tijd gehad om te verifiëren of het waar is, dus ik ben afgegaan op zijn mening. Volgens mij klopt het wel, dit is wat hij zegt op een ander forum:
The two common species of Messor that live in south europa are really hard to tell apart by the queens.
However when the first workers appear it is easy to tell since Messor capitatus has black workers and Messor wasmanni, the other Messor common in south europe, has a red thorax.
In rare occasions I saw Messor wasmanni workers that were almost completley black but you still could tell them apart.
The queen of Messor capitatus might not be that intimidatingly big but the grown majors are.
The reason why they are calles Messor capitatus (I think it comes from caput which means head) is because of the ridiculous size of their head in relation to their body. This picture was taken by a friend of mine during our Croatia expedition in late 2010.
When you measure the ant using the structure of the box that you can see on the side you can compare it to this Camponotus aethiops Major;

It is nearly same size so it should be the biggest Messor in europe, however it looks the biggest because of it´s gigantic head. Also some of the Majors aren´t able to walk because of the head, they stay inside and just crack open big seeds or rarley come out to cut grass that grows on the streets of the ants. By the way cutting away gras is one of the main reasons why the majors of those species get this big, there aren´t very many hard seeds to crack and they aren´t fit for fighting anymore.

Even een kleine update betreft hoe mijn prille kolonie ervoor staat. Koningin leeft met twee werksters en momenteel zijn er twee larven en heeft ze net eitjes gelegd. Gelukkig maar want het heeft een week geduurd voordat ze begon met leggen. Ze leven momenteel in een reageerbuis die ik weer in een bak heb gestopt. Ik heb er daarnaast een andere reageerbuis ingestopt zonder waterreservoir. Ik houd ze op 26-29 graden. Ik geef ze vogelzaad maar ik ben op zoek naar ander soort zaad als aanvulling, zoals evening primrose, lavender, rock rose and dandelion en ander soort zaad dat geschikt is voor Messor barbarus/capitatus. Weet iemand waar ik dit soort zaden in grote hoeveelheden kan kopen?

Messor capitatus workers rarely leave the nest in well-formed columns, while the other two species form foraging trails, with M. bouvieri forming temporary trails and M. barbarus foraging on a stable system of permanent foraging trails.

De koningin gekocht van Antstore heeft sinds haar aankomst nog geen eitjes gelegd. De twee eitjes die ze al had zijn nu larven geworden.
Ik vraag mij nu af waar het precies aan ligt. Wellicht zijn de omgevingsfactoren niet goed. De mieren hebben een hele hoge stapel van zaden gemaakt in het reageerbuisje voor de ingang. Ze eten wel goed, zowel zaden als fruitvliegjes.
Heeft iemand een idee?
